Wanted: Lots and Lots of Doctors

Need a doctor? Too bad. Turns out, they are a precious resource. With the passage of the healthcare bill, more people will be eligible for doctor visits. But that’s also the problem: There aren’t enough doctors to see all the newly insured.

Various medical groups, including the Association of American Medical Colleges, have warned of as much as a 125,000-doctor deficit by 2025. That’s nothing to sneeze at. While organizations disagree on the doctor dent and date of the doomsday scenario, they all concur that the system is about to be hit with a huge strain it can’t handle.

In the future, health care professionals foresee long waits, longer travel times, shorter visits, and even no access at all to primary care physicians in some parts of the country. It’s enough to make anyone sick.

One solution, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times: Phone it in. “Telemedicine” is increasingly used where there are already doctor shortages, such as rural areas. Sending more students to medical school will help in the long run, but it’s no quick-fix.

Plan B: Don’t get sick. According to one study in Britain, employees are so nervous about taking sick days, they’re just not taking them. In fact, absences from sickness are at the lowest level since 1987. See, mind over reality. Works every time.
